UKCA ‘Ex’ Certification: Navigating New Standards for the UK Market
The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) ‘Ex’ Certification, also known as UKEX, is a pivotal mark for products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres within Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales). It serves as a replacement for the EU’s ATEX certification, aligning with the UK’s post-Brexit regulatory framework.
Since January 1, 2021, the UKEX approval has been in effect, with a transitional period extending until December 31, 2024. This period allows businesses to adapt to the new requirements, during which CE marked ‘existing stock’ can still be accepted.
The UKCA ‘Ex’ Certification is essential for manufacturers and distributors as it confirms that their products meet the UK’s safety standards. From January 1, 2025, only UKCA Issued ‘EX’ Certificates will be accepted in the UK for products that previously required ATEX Notified Body Certification.
For products to bear the UKEX mark, they must be certified to ‘UK Designated Standards’ by a UK Government Appointed Body. This ensures that products are safe for use in hazardous environments and comply with the necessary UK legislation.
Manufacturers located outside the UK will need a UK Responsible Person to handle the certification process, and UK Approved Bodies have been designated to issue the appropriate certificates needed for market entry.
The UKCA ‘Ex’ Certification underscores the UK’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards while also providing clarity and continuity for businesses operating in the post-Brexit landscape.
